Sunny Beach was first developed on an empty piece of land in the 1950s, when the then communist era government of Bulgaria launched the construction of the first accommodations, the beaches and plant life improvement, and the linking with the largest Bulgarian cities on the Black Sea – Burgas and Varna. Millions of people from different countries visited the resort each summer in the late 1960s to the late 1980s. The historical change in Bulgarian political system in 1989 led to the flourishing of Sunny Beach, its modern facilities’ construction and additional development, throughout the 1990s, and especially in the 2000s. Today, Sunny Beach is the largest Bulgarian seaside resort, with some of the finest hotels and attractions, and millions of visitors each year.
Getting to Sunny Beach is easiest by bus, either arriving from the region’s airport or from Bulgaria’s capital Sofia. The closest airport to Sunny Beach is the Burgas International Airport in the city of Burgas, 25 km away. It is a medium-size airport with extensive flights services, especially during the summer holiday season. Cars can be rented at the airport, in Burgas, or in Sunny Beach itself. Buses travel from Sofia to Burgas on a daily basis throughout the entire year, with additional vehicles and richer schedule – including Sunny Beach – during the summer months.
